Better Cotton Initiative Sustainability Profile

BCI exists to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment it grows in and better for the sector’s future.

The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) is a global not-for-profit organisation and the largest cotton sustainability programme in the world. BCI exists to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment it grows in and better for the sector’s future. Together with our partners we provide training on more sustainable farming practices to more than 2.3 million cotton farmers in 23 countries. In the 2018-19 cotton season, licensed BCI Farmers produced more than 5.6 million metric tonnes of ‘Better Cotton’ – that accounts for around 22% of global cotton production! We are truly a joint effort, encompassing organisations all the way from farms to fashion and textile brands, and civil society organisations, driving the cotton sector towards sustainability. BCI aims to transform cotton production worldwide by developing Better Cotton as a sustainable mainstream commodity. By the end of 2020, our goal is to train five million farmers worldwide on more sustainable agricultural practices, and have Better Cotton account for 30% of global cotton production.
