Landscape approach pilots

In 2020, Better Cotton Initiative began exploring a landscape or jurisdictional approach, which means working across a whole region instead of only on individual farms. It signed a two-year agreement with The Proforest Initiative and planned pilot projects in Pakistan and Turkey. The work was meant to bring together farmers, governments, NGOs, and companies around shared goals such as water stewardship, land rights, habitat protection, and rural development.

Independent data audit

In 2025, Better Cotton Initiative had its Results Indicator data management system reviewed by an independent auditor, ADC Consulting. The audit covered data from 2016-17 to 2023-24 across nine countries. The auditor said the system was robust, transparent, and broadly compliant with international data-quality standards. It also found no critical weaknesses, while suggesting better documentation and version control to make the system easier to scale.

Farmer training and support

Better Cotton Initiative says it trains farmers and farm workers in more responsible cotton growing. Its public site says the standard supports better environmental care, fairer working practices, and stronger incomes and resilience for farming communities. It also says the network includes more than 2,500 members and works with over 50 partners on the ground. This is part of its long-running model for improving cotton production at scale.
