Chick-fil-A shows a mixed sustainability picture. Its public focus is on food waste, recycling used cooking oil into renewable diesel, and testing energy-saving ideas like solar microgrids. It also says it works on packaging waste, recycling, water use, and energy use at its support center. Independent coverage confirms some of these actions, including a 2024 food waste pact and a 2022 global impact report. At the same time, an independent impact rating gives the company a below-average score overall, which suggests its public sustainability work is still limited compared with stronger peers. Positive Sentiment Found Public coverage gives Chick-fil-A some credit for practical waste-reduction work. Environment+Energy Leader highlighted its 2022 Global Impact Report and described the company’s efforts to donate surplus food, compost waste, and turn used cooking oil into renewable diesel. ReFED also welcomed Chick-fil-A as the first restaurant signatory to the U.S. Food Waste Pact, saying its participation could help push wider action across the food sector. The company’s own reporting says it has diverted large amounts of food waste and is testing solar microgrids, which adds to the sense that it is taking visible steps on a few specific issues. These signals point to real activity, especially on food waste, even if they do not show a broad ESG program. Common Criticisms: Independent impact scoring paints a weaker picture. Ethos ESG gives Chick-fil-A a D rating with an overall impact score of 32, placing it in the bottom quarter of companies it tracks and behind most peers in its sector. The same assessment flags poor performance in areas such as reduced inequality, terrestrial biodiversity, and racial justice and civil rights. That does not prove specific wrongdoing, but it does suggest the company has limited publicly visible progress across a wide range of ESG topics. Chick-fil-A also has a lot of sustainability information on its own site, but third-party verification is thin, so many claims are not independently checked in the material provided. For consumers, that means the company’s public sustainability story is still narrow and uneven.

2025
Divert 25 million pounds of waste
Chick-fil-A says it plans to divert 25 million pounds of restaurant food waste from landfills by 2025. It says this will come from food donations, composting, and other waste-diversion efforts. Independent coverage said the company had already diverted 22 million pounds since 2020, which put it at about 88% of the target at the time reported.
