Renewed stationery for planet, people and education

Stationery Aid is a Queensland-based not-for-profit charity founded in 2020 by Alison and Jan Schutt, who witnessed the enormous volume of perfectly usable school supplies going to waste each year. Rather than let them go to landfill, they built a volunteer-powered network to collect, sort, clean, renew and redistribute refurbished stationery to students experiencing hardship across Australia. Stationery Aid is a registered charity and Public Benevolent Institution (PBI) with the ACNC, meaning donations over $2 are tax deductible. Operating collection points across Queensland and in Sydney, they support under-resourced students, regional schools, and community education programs - ensuring no child is held back by a lack of basic learning tools.

Stationery Rescued from Landfill: 88% Diversion Rate

Every item of stationery collected by Stationery Aid is reused, recycled or responsibly repurposed - achieving a 88% landfill diversion rate across all donations received. Each year, tonnes of perfectly usable pens, pencils, rulers, notebooks and art supplies are discarded by Australian schools and households at the end of the year. Stationery Aid intercepts these items before disposal, cleaning and sorting them so they can be redistributed as complete booklist bundles or starter packs to students experiencing financial hardship. Stationery Aid has a target of zero waste to landfill by 2032.

Officeworks 'Bring it Back' Partnership

In 2025, Stationery Aid became a key partner in Officeworks' expanded 'Bring it Back' program - Australia's largest retail stationery take-back initiative - scaling their Queensland collection network to reach Officeworks stores across the state. A successful trial in Queensland Officeworks stores collected enough supplies to provide 253 disadvantaged students with complete school booklists. This partnership demonstrates how retail infrastructure can be leveraged to create circular outcomes for both the environment and disadvantaged communities.

Officeworks 'Make a Difference Appeal' - $71,000 raised

In 2024, Stationery Aid was selected as one of 16 community organisations across Australia to be supported by Officeworks' annual 'Make a Difference Appeal'. Throughout June 2024, Officeworks customers donated at the checkout in-store and online, raising more than $71,000 for Stationery Aid. Every $60 raised provides a full student booklist for a disadvantaged child - covering 12 months of school supplies - with funds also directed toward expanding partnerships in rural, regional and remote communities across Australia.

Volunteer-Powered Circular Model

Stationery Aid's operations are driven by a community of dedicated volunteers who collect, sort, clean and repackage donated stationery at drop-off points across Queensland. Whether packing stationery packs, running school collection drives or helping at distribution events, volunteers are at the heart of Stationery Aid's circular model. This community-led approach keeps operating costs low, ensures more donated funds reach students directly, and builds a culture of shared responsibility for waste and education equity.

Supporting Students in Remote and Regional Australia

Stationery Aid actively targets students in remote, regional and low-income communities - the groups least likely to have access to basic school supplies and most affected by the cost-of-living pressures on family budgets. Through school partnerships with frontline services, kindergartens, primary and secondary schools in underserved areas, Stationery Aid distributes starter packs and full booklist bundles to ensure every student can begin the school year with dignity and confidence. Funds raised through the Officeworks Make a Difference Appeal are directly channelled toward growing these regional relationships.
