TASAKI Sustainability Actions

Sustainability Committee established

In May 2022, we established a new Sustainability Committee to strengthen our efforts across the entire group. Going forward, we will regularly track our progress toward our goals and consider new initiatives to address issues on a group-wide basis, transcending divisional boundaries as we actively engage in efforts to achieve our goals in line with the roadmap.

Conflict-free procurement

We realize 100% conflict-free procurement of key materials, including pearls, diamonds and metals.

Chemical management practices

In compliance with global standards, TASAKI does not use cadmium at all in its manufacturing processes. We are pursuing initiatives to reduce as much as possible the use of metals that commonly cause allergic reactions (e.g., nickel). We use safer chemicals in our jewellery manufacturing processes.

Waste and resource use

After harvest, the shells are either given away free of charge to companies that specialize in processing them into decorative items such as buttons, or they are re-purposed as weights for rafts at our pearl farms. The adductor muscles are consumed as food. We have also adopted a novel approach to sustainability and introduced the appeal of pearls from different angles, such as arranging for paintings featuring artist’s chalk made from powdered shells.

Climate and energy measures

To minimize energy consumption in working places, such as air conditioning and lighting, we hold regular training sessions to raise employees’ awareness of saving energy. We are gradually replacing the lights in our ateliers, pearl farms, offices, stores and other facilities with LEDs, which consume less energy. We also keep the operation of the engines on our pearl farm vessels to a minimum. We achieved a reduction in copy paper consumption by bringing some of our internal application systems fully online (introduced in November 2022).

Compliance and whistleblowing

TASAKI positions compliance and risk management as key factors of its management and has established manuals for each division to implement and monitor, with group-wide rules taking the highest precedence. TASAKI has introduced a whistleblower system to accept reports or requests for advice regarding infringements of laws and regulations or company rules and implement appropriate responses.

Diversity and inclusion

As of October 2022, female employees accounted for 33% of TASAKI’s management positions, meeting the government target of 30%. Maternity and parental leaves are granted to all those who request them, and everyone who wishes to return to work after taking maternity leave has done so.

Social contribution activities

In April 2011, TASAKI launched the TASAKI Charity Project “MAGOKORO JAPAN” to support those affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Since then, we have continued to donate all proceeds from the sale of special jewelry released on the TASAKI online shop on March 11 every year. As of February 2022, total donations have reached more than 42 million yen.
