Made straps from fishing nets

In October 2020, Ulysse Nardin launched the R-STRAP, a watch strap made from recycled fishing nets. The strap was designed for the DIVER, MARINE, and FREAK X watches. Fishing nets are a major source of ocean plastic, so this move aimed to reuse waste that would otherwise keep polluting the sea. The brand presented this as part of its work on a more circular approach, which means keeping materials in use for longer instead of throwing them away.

Built a sea-material research unit

Ulysse Nardin set up a dedicated research unit to study materials from the sea. The team looked at oyster shells, algae, marine PET (plastic bottles collected from the sea), and polyamide fishing nets. The goal was to find lower-impact materials for future watchmaking projects. This is an example of product research linked to sustainability, because it tries to replace more resource-heavy materials with ones that may have a smaller environmental footprint.

Used recycled nets in DIVER NET

The DIVER NET concept watch used recycled fishing nets for several parts, including the case, middle, back, and bezel decoration. The brand worked with FIL&FAB, a French supplier that collects old nets from harbours and turns them into polyamide pellets, a plastic raw material. Ulysse Nardin also used a strap made from sea plastic processed by TIDE and replaced traditional sapphire glass with transparent ceramic glass, which it said could lower energy use during manufacturing.

Supported Vendée Globe

Ulysse Nardin served as the official timekeeper for the 2020 Vendée Globe, a solo round-the-world yacht race. The brand linked this role to ocean pollution awareness, saying sailors would face the problem of floating plastic in the sea during the race. While this is not a direct cleanup action, it shows the brand using a major sporting event to connect its identity with marine protection and ocean sustainability.
