SS20 collection for sustainability

The SS2020 collection of Zalando’s private label features only items made with more sustainable materials. From now, all new products of Zalando’s private label ZIGN either contain 50 percent more sustainable materials, or at least 20 percent recycled content.

Supply base and Higg data

All ZIGN products in the 2020 collection are manufactured in the top 50 percent of our supply base when it comes to social performance. We also require these factories to submit environmental data to the Higg Index to help track and improve areas such as greenhouse gas emissions, water use and waste.

Sustainability flag tagging

The collection has an improved tagging system known as the ‘sustainability flag’ to help customers better understand the sustainability credentials of each product.

Organic cotton jersey collections

Last year we decided to go entirely to organic cotton for our jersey collections, and it will be used for our Spring and Summer 2021 jersey collections. In addition, in our ZIGN range, we have strict requirements on recycled polyester and knitted fibers, and are increasing our use of natural dyes.

Circularity collection with QR code

Zalando Private Labels last year collaborated with Fashion for Good and circular.fashion to introduce the “redeZIGN for Circularity” collection. The collection features a QR code to provide customers with additional product transparency, including information on tradein and recycling options.

Extending product life

Since 2020, we have extended the life of more than 6.3 million fashion products. It has involved testing various methods across four product stages: design and manufacture, use, reuse, and closing the loop.

Pre-owned assortment

We continue to promote reuse via our assortment of about 270,000 pre-owned products, available to Zalando customers across 13 markets and in 11 of our outlet stores, with new items added daily.

Investments in textile recyclers

We have invested in three textile-to-textile recyclers: Circ, Ambercycle, and Infinited Fiber Company. Our private labels business is exploring possibilities to secure long-term access to recycled materials through these innovators.

Recycling trials and projects

We are participating in various recycling trials and projects, including Accelerating Circularity’s cellulose and polyester recycling trials, the “Reshoes'' footwear sorting and dismantling project led by the recycling innovation platform CETIA, and several programs with Fashion for Good, including an innovative recycling project co-led by FastFeetGrinded to drive circularity in footwear.
