Set a sustainability policy

TAL says it has a Sustainable Business Practices Policy that guides its environmental, social, and governance work. The policy is built around values like honesty, long-term partnerships, and balancing people, planet, and profit. TAL says this policy helps its affiliates create a better work environment and support society. It also says its wider strategy aims to cut waste, use resources more carefully, and keep improving with stakeholders.

Measured climate emissions

TAL says it adopted the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, a common method for measuring and reporting emissions. It says it first measured its operational GHG footprint in 2009 and has worked to reduce emissions since then. By 2022, it says its GHG intensity had fallen by 33% compared with 2009. It also says it is improving energy efficiency, upgrading equipment, switching to lower-carbon fuels, and using renewable energy.

Reduced water use

TAL says it began measuring its water footprint in 2011. It reports that by 2022 it had cut water intensity by 64% compared with its earlier baseline. The company says it has done this by reducing, reusing, and recycling water in its factories. It also says it invested in water recycling systems and recycled about 16% of its total water use across factories in 2022, up from 13% in 2018.

Managed wastewater and chemicals

TAL says it aims to meet local wastewater rules and also follow industry standards such as the ZDHC Wastewater Guidelines and the bluesign® standard. ZDHC means Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals, a program that tries to remove harmful chemicals from textile production. TAL also says it works with bluesign® to keep hazardous substances out of its products and supports suppliers to do the same. It adds that it uses input management, which means trying to remove risky chemicals before they enter production.

Cut waste and reuse scraps

TAL says it follows the 3Rs of waste management: reduce, reuse, and recycle. It says it tries to prevent waste first, then sorts waste streams and works with local partners to find recycling and disposal options. It also says it reuses cotton scraps from cutting tables to make new garments through its Innogreen™ product line. This points to a circular economy approach, which means keeping materials in use for longer instead of throwing them away.

Built LEED-certified sites

TAL says three of its buildings are LEED certified. LEED is a green building rating system that checks how well a building manages energy, water, materials, and indoor conditions. TAL says both of its factories in Vietnam are LEED Gold certified and its Hong Kong headquarters is LEED Platinum. It presents these certifications as proof that building design and operations are part of its long-term sustainability work.

Used Higg FEM since 2013

TAL says it has used the Higg Facility Environmental Module, or Higg FEM, since 2013 to measure and compare factory environmental performance. The Higg FEM is a factory assessment tool used in the apparel industry. TAL says it set average factory score targets of 65 for 2023, 75 for 2024, and 80 for 2025. It also says it will resume publishing scores once Cascale, the group behind the tool, finishes its updated verification process.

Ran ESG education events

On 2 April 2025, TAL took part in the ESG Teen Ambassador Program run by the Child Psychoecology Foundation. It hosted students from The Harbour School and gave a talk and workshop on sustainability and innovation. TAL says its corporate sustainability team and innovation hub shared its sustainability strategy and industry challenges with the students. The event was meant to help young people understand ESG, which stands for environmental, social, and governance.
